In 1952 the Gemological Institute of America [GIA] set about to introduce a more effective diamond grading system. The system evaluates diamonds on a basis of make, colour and clarity using the previously existing terminology of classification. The GIA system is still in use today and consists of six different categories and eleven grades of diamond.
